So this is why we (some of us) can cook !

Augustus was a very accomplished chef. He was the Head Chef at Polly's Hotel in South Africa, which was one of the top hotels in its time.

He was selected to tour South Africa as the chef for the Royal party in 1947 ... see Nebel Royalty, so he cooked for a King, and future (and current in 2022) Queen.

(fix: dads granny) said she once went to visit him at the hotel to give him an urgent message, and saw a table full of drinks in the kitchen - apparently that was the common way of tipping the chef in those days - send him a good drink! Unfortunately it didn't do him well in later life, as he started enjoying them too much !
