My granny.
Winifred was born in UK, her mother and father ran a pub in UK, and when she was 17 they migrated to South Africa. She had a sister in the UK, but she died of consumption.
Her father had migrated a few years earlier. After arriving in South Africa to join her father, they could not find him. They battled initially, and stayed with Aunty Kitty, in the old Tin and Wood house in Malan Street, Riviera, Pretoria. Later they found her father - he had created a new life for himself ... so her mother divorced him.
They were good cooks / bakers, and her mother later started a Tea Room called "The Singing Kettle" in Kudu's arcade, Pretoria. In later years it became quite famous. I remember my grandmothers famous baking - shortbread was amazing, but my favourite was her chocolate cakes ... not too chocolaty, light and delicious - to this day I cannot eat another chocolate cake.
She married Henry Nebel , but in her later years they were divorced.
Winifred lived her later life in Queenswood, Pretoria, South Africa till her death. She was near her children and their families, and most of us frequently visited her at her 3rd floor flat.
