This is a Wiki about (one-of) the Nebel families. There are many Nebel families, but this wiki is about one of them. Ours. If any of it offends someone, don't read it. Simples.

Nebel is the German word for fog and stellar nebula. It is related to the Latin nebula.

As far as we know, the origins of this Nebel family are Prussian.

Much of this history, and really the inspiration to record and not loose all this, comes from a fountain of knowledge, my mother ... Yvonne Nebel (nee Crofford). As her eyesight is failing and her computer skills are non-existent, I have entered most of it on her behalf - so don't blame her for bad grammar and english ... and don't blame me for content! 😀 My cunning plan is to get a few other younger family members to add to this... so blame them.

This may become a busy page as much of the info comes from my mother ( Yvonne )... the fountain of all family knowledge. She lives in George, South Africa.

Recently, while telling her about the Queen's Platinum Jubilee (June 2022), she mentioned some family history related to the Royals ... Nebel Royalty has a nice ring to it 😀 ... and so this wiki was born. The idea being to record some of what she knows, so future generations have a bit of family history.

Sadly Lucy passed away in Aug 2015 from Kidney failure at the age of 91.

Henry Swanneveld served in WW2 as a fighter pilot, flying Hawker Hurricanes to support American Bombers in North Africa.

Henry was born in South Africa. He was from German descent.

He married Winifred Nebel, and they had 2 children - John Nebel and Valerie Nebel. They divorced later, and he remarried a German woman (Naomi) and had 3 more children with her - Steven, Henry, and Elizabeth.

Henry was creative and had the ability to do anything well he put his mind too, he became a very accomplished carpenter, then builder, and later farmer.

Famous Carpenter and Builder
Henry is famed for his accomplished building and carpentry. Initially he was a carpenter, and excelled at it. He did the carpentry for the famous Libertas buildings in Pretoria, South Africa.

Later he became a builder, and accomplished at that too - he built many Churches in SA of stone.

He also built a few of the camps in the famous Kruger National Park.

Henry then became a farmer.

Accomplished Farmer
In later years, he became a farmer, and is known for being the first Tobacco farmer in Rustenburg.

He enjoyed different types of farming, and over time bought a few farms in the north, at one point he had 6 farms. He farmed crops as well as animals. One of my earliest memories was visiting his farm after harvesting peanuts, and climbing on the huge piles of peanuts drying in the sun. I also remember his lovely large stone house, which he had built himself.

One of his farms he "donated" to the government of South Africa for treating and studying animals.

Augustus was a very accomplished chef. He was the Head Chef at Polly's Hotel in South Africa, which was one of the top hotels in its time.

He was selected to tour South Africa as the chef for the Royal party in 1947 ... see Nebel Royalty, so he cooked for a King, and future (and current in 2022) Queen Elizabeth.

(fix: dads granny) said she once went to visit him at the hotel to give him an urgent message, and saw a table full of drinks in the kitchen - apparently that was the common way of tipping the chef in those days - to send him an expensive drink! Unfortunately it didn't do him well in later life, as he started enjoying them too much ! :(

One of my earliest memories was visiting his farm after harvesting peanuts, and climbing on the huge piles of peanuts drying in the sun. I also remember his lovely large stone house, which he had built himself.

One of his farms he "donated" to the government of South Africa for treating and studying animals. That farm is since known as "Onderstepoort", and is a world famous Veterinary Hospital and centre for Veterinary Studies run by the University of Pretoria. Many accomplished veterinarians have been trained there, and ironically our current veterinarian in Surrey, UK was trained there.

Nebel Royalty ... well ... as close as
There's actually more than one occasion the Nebel's have been close to royalty !

So, a long-long time ago, the Royal family visited South Africa - 1947 it was.

Well, Augustus Nebel - who was a very successful and famous chef, travelled around South Africa with the royal party to prepare their meals.

Yes ... we fed the Royals :)

Malcolm Nebel contributed this image ... It's from a photo he took some years ago where he saw it hanging in Uncle Roberts room ...

Hurrah

Now we know how the Queen keeps warm in winter in Windsor castle !

And then there's the longer distant Royal link ... where Edward Hudson's brother was a Queens Guard in UK.

This is a Wiki about (one-of) the Nebel families. There are many Nebel families, but this wiki is about one of them. Note that some of this is based on stories passed on through generations, so of course its all true! And if it offends someone, don't read it.
